Being “stuck” on Maui during these days of Covid-19 does not seem like a bad thing, and indeed it is not, but I am struggling to find photographic subjects that interest me. I decided to return to an experiment I did some years ago in Japan, shooting images of breaking waves at slow shutter speeds, and then processing them in a way to sharpen what are often quite soft images. For me this has been a quite satisfying way to satisfy my urge to dabble in a type of photography in which one doesn’t know exactly what one will get when pressing the shutter button. I have traveled to a number of different beaches around Maui, and each has a look depending on the shoreline topography and the waves characteristic of their different positions around the island. The subject is always the same, breaking waves, and while there are very marked similarities between many, each wave is unique and carries its own signature and energy. There are a lot of these, but I have set them in random order so that they display differently each time. I hope you enjoy them.
