Burano is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon, seven kilometers from Venice proper. It is more modest than its neighbor, Murano, which resembles a mini-Venice. Burano is humbler, with smaller and plainer houses, a working man’s island, with a population under 3000. I first visited the island in 1975, and was enchanted by the fact that the houses are all painted in bright hues, which caught my photographer’s eye as they reflected in Burano’s canals. Sadly for me, I had a camera but only black and white film, and for the past 48 years have hoped to get back to try to photograph what I saw then. Finally, I managed to return. The weather had been bad the whole week, and heavy clouds were predicted, but I decided to visit nonetheless. On the top out on the vaporetto, it was gray and misty, but the gods were smiling on me that day. As I arrived the clouds cleared to reveal a glorious afternoon sun, and the waters in the canals were calm, making for exactly the images I was seeking. Here are some shots from that day
